Open Data
The open data catalogue is the single place where the departments and network services of the Velocity Interoperability Network publish data for anyone to download and reuse. Every dataset in the catalogue is published under the Network Open Data Licence, which permits copying, adaptation and redistribution for any purpose provided the publishing body is acknowledged, and to the data standards adopted by the Network.
Datasets are published by the body that holds the data. The Data Office checks each dataset against the standards, lists it in the catalogue with a description of its contents, the name of the publishing body, the frequency with which it is updated and the date of its most recent update, and maintains the schedule of releases to come. No registration or account is required to download data.

Most of the eighteen datasets are registers, directories, timetables and schedules that are republished when amended or on a fixed cycle; the remainder are series of observations or transactions updated hourly, daily, weekly, monthly or quarterly. Every dataset is published as comma-separated values; those with a nested or hierarchical structure are also published as machine-readable objects. Each dataset carries its licence, its publishing body and the date of its last update in its metadata.

The register of member organisations and the directory of departments and network services are the reference datasets of the Network: the identifiers they assign are used in every other dataset in the catalogue, so that records about the same organisation, department or site can be joined across publishers. Their maintenance is described on the Data Standards page.

A dataset is added to the schedule once the publishing body has confirmed to the Office that the data can be released and has agreed a date. Datasets are removed from the schedule, and the reason recorded, if the publishing body later determines that the data cannot be released in whole or in part; a dataset containing personal information is published only in aggregated form.
Errors and corrections. Where an error is found in a published dataset, the publishing body corrects it and the Office records the correction against the dataset with the date and a description of what changed. Errors may be reported to contact@data.gov.vin and are passed to the publishing body within one working day.
Data that is not in the catalogue may still be held by a department or network service. The Register of Data Holdings lists the principal holdings of every body, and the Requesting Data page sets out how to ask for data that has not been published. Answers to common questions are in the frequently asked questions.
